What is happening? Science has two main theories, and both are fascinating.


Theory 1: The Kill Bite Firing Without a Target

The most widely accepted explanation is that the chattering is the motor pattern for the predatory kill bite — firing involuntarily in response to visual prey stimulation.

Here’s the context: when a cat kills a small animal, it doesn’t crush or claw it to death — it delivers a precise, rapid bite to the back of the neck or skull, severing the spinal cord. This “killing bite” involves a very specific jaw movement: rapid, chittering, staccato — essentially the same motion you see during chattering.

John Bradshaw, in Cat Sense, describes this as the cat’s jaw essentially rehearsing the kill bite in response to prey stimuli it cannot reach. The visual input (bird moving) triggers the predatory motor sequence, the motor sequence runs without a target, and the result is the chattering sound.

This explains why the chattering appears specifically in response to prey at a distance — particularly prey separated from the cat by glass, which the cat cannot close the gap to. The predatory sequence activates; the prey is unreachable; the jaw runs the kill-bite motor pattern with nowhere to direct it.

The sound is frustration — in the precise neurological sense of a predatory sequence activated without consummation.


Theory 2: Vocal Mimicry to Lure Prey

This theory came from field research in the Amazon. Researchers from the Fauna Communications Research Institute, studying wild pied tamarin monkeys, recorded a wild margay (a small wild cat native to South America) apparently mimicking the call of a tamarin infant to lure the monkeys closer.

The margay produced vocalisations that closely matched tamarin calls — and the tamarin group responded with curiosity and movement toward the source before detecting the cat and fleeing. The observation was published in the journal Bioacoustics (2010) and represented the first documented case of a wild felid apparently using vocal mimicry to hunt.

The researchers and subsequently several cat behaviour scientists proposed that domestic cat chattering at birds might be a similar phenomenon — the cat producing a sound that mimics or resembles bird vocalisations to lure prey. Bird chattering in cats does have some acoustic similarity to certain bird calls.

Important caveat: The mimicry theory is interesting but not strongly evidenced for domestic cats. The margay observation was a single documented field case. Whether domestic cat chattering is acoustically similar enough to bird calls to function as mimicry remains uncertain. The kill-bite motor pattern explanation has stronger mechanistic support.

The two theories are not mutually exclusive — the same sound might arise from the kill-bite pattern and also happen to resemble bird calls, providing incidental lure benefit.


Does My Cat Know It’s Making That Sound?

Almost certainly not in any conscious, deliberate sense.

The chattering appears to be an involuntary response — a reflex-like motor pattern triggered by specific visual stimuli. Cats don’t appear to deliberately initiate chattering the way they might initiate a meow or a trill directed at a human. The jaw movement starts without apparent intention, runs, and the sound emerges.

This is consistent with the kill-bite motor pattern explanation: the neurological sequence is triggering automatically, not being deliberately deployed.


Is Chattering Frustration? Is the Cat Stressed?

The frustration element is probably real at a neurological level — the predatory sequence is activated and cannot complete. Whether cats experience this as frustration in any subjective sense is unclear.

What’s observable: chattering behaviour doesn’t appear to distress cats significantly. They typically return to normal behaviour quickly after the bird moves away. Some cats produce the sound and then go find something else to do; others can maintain it for extended periods at a busy bird feeder.

Unless your cat is showing other signs of chronic stress (over-grooming, appetite changes, hiding), window bird-watching — chattering included — is generally considered enriching rather than harmful. It’s providing visual stimulation, activating the predatory system, and engaging the cat with its environment.


Other Strange Cat Sounds, Briefly Explained

Chirping/trilling: A short, rising sound cats use to greet familiar individuals (often owners) or to call kittens. It’s warm and social — basically the feline version of “hey.”

The silent meow: Cats can produce vocalisations above the range of human hearing. The “silent meow” you see — mouth opens, nothing audible emerges — may be a high-frequency call that the cat’s intended recipient (you, another cat) can hear even if you can’t. Some researchers believe domestic cats have learned to modulate their vocalisations to different audiences.

The trill-meow: A combination sound, often used to solicit attention or food. It’s the acoustic equivalent of a raised hand.

Hissing and spitting: Defensive threat displays. The cat is not feeling good about what’s happening. Respect accordingly.


Should I Put a Bird Feeder Outside My Window?

If you want a more enriched indoor cat, yes — with one consideration.

Window bird-watching provides genuine visual stimulation and activates the predatory engagement system, which is beneficial for indoor cats that lack other outlets. The chattering is part of the experience.

The consideration: if your cat is highly prey-motivated and the window provides access to outdoor space (a cat door, an open window), make sure the bird feeder doesn’t become a bird feeder and a hunting ground. Indoor-only cats watching outdoor birds from a closed window is ideal.


Quick Answers to Everything Else

My cat chatters at flies and insects but not birds. Why?
Same mechanism — the prey stimulus triggers the response. Cats that are particularly insect-oriented may chatter at anything small and moving, regardless of species. Some cats will chatter at a computer cursor.

My cat never chatters. Is something wrong with it?
Not all cats chatter. Individual variation in the intensity of predatory motor responses is normal. A cat that watches birds silently and with intense focus is engaged with the same predatory system — just expressing it differently.

My cat chatters and then runs to the door. Is it frustrated?
Possibly — the predatory sequence activated and the cat is looking for a way to complete it. This is a good opportunity for a play session that lets the cat chase, “catch,” and dispatch a toy. It resolves the activation productively.
