Cats startle at cucumbers because they’re startled by unexpected objects appearing in a place they didn’t expect them — not because cucumbers specifically terrify them. The viral videos were funny. The behaviour they depict is stress. The repeated internet trend of sneaking cucumbers behind cats is mildly cruel, and several veterinary behaviourists would like a word.
The Cucumber Videos Were Funny. They Were Also Stress Responses.
You’ve seen the videos. Cat eats from bowl. Owner sneaks cucumber onto the floor behind cat. Cat turns around, sees it, and launches itself approximately four feet vertically while making the facial expression of someone who has seen a ghost.
The internet loved it. Millions of views. Countless imitations.
Here’s what was actually happening: someone snuck a large, unfamiliar object into a space the cat considered safe and predictable, and then filmed the cat having a fright response. Which is less hilarious once you think about it.
Why Cucumbers Specifically?
The honest answer: it’s not cucumbers specifically.
The original viral videos showed cats being startled by cucumbers placed silently behind them while they ate. The combination of three factors created the dramatic response:
1. Surprise and context violation
Cats pay close attention to their environment and build a detailed spatial map of what is where. The feeding area, specifically, is a high-trust, high-attention zone. When a cat turns around and finds a large object in a place it knows was empty two minutes ago, the “unexpected object in a familiar space” response triggers — which in a prey species is always going to lean toward alarm.
2. Possible snake-recognition reflex
Several animal behaviourists, including Jill Goldman, have proposed that the elongated shape of a cucumber may superficially trigger a hard-wired wariness response to snake-like shapes. Cats and their ancestors have co-evolved alongside venomous snakes for millions of years, and a fast response to an elongated, potentially dangerous shape on the ground would have survival value. This theory is plausible but not definitively proven — what’s clear is that the shape contributes to the alarm.
3. The cat was vulnerable
A cat eating is a focused, somewhat physically exposed cat. Discovering an unexpected large object behind you while in a low-vigilance state amplifies the startle response considerably. The same cucumber presented in neutral circumstances, or approached gradually, would likely produce very little reaction.
Is This Unique to Cucumbers?
No. The same response can be produced by:
– A banana placed in the same manner
– A rubber toy snake
– Any unfamiliar large object appearing silently in a familiar space
– An unexpected change in the environment (furniture moved, something new on the floor)
Cucumbers became the meme. The phenomenon is “unexpected object in a familiar context.” The vegetable is incidental.
What Is the Cat Actually Experiencing?
The leap-and-flee response you see in the videos is the sympathetic nervous system response to perceived threat — what is commonly called the fight-or-flight response. In that moment, the cat’s heart rate spikes, its pupils dilate, its muscles flood with adrenaline, and it puts as much distance as possible between itself and the threat before it even consciously processes what the threat is.
This is evolutionarily appropriate. A prey animal that waits to confirm whether something is a snake before reacting tends not to be an ancestor of anything.
But it’s also a stress response. The cat experienced a moment of genuine fear. The adrenaline takes time to metabolise. The cat is now in a heightened state for some period of time afterward, scanning its environment for whatever it was that just surprised it.
Con Slobodchikoff, professor emeritus at Northern Arizona University and author of Chasing Doctor Dolittle: Learning the Language of Animals (2012), has noted that we routinely underestimate the richness and intensity of animal emotional experience. The cat in the video is not performing. It’s afraid.
Is the Cucumber Prank Harmful?
Veterinary behaviourists and the RSPCA have been fairly consistent on this: yes, if repeated.
A single startling experience in a well-adjusted cat is unlikely to cause lasting harm. Cats are generally resilient to isolated stressors. But deliberately and repeatedly inducing fear responses in an animal that trusts you:
- Erodes the trust that makes the cat feel safe in its environment
- Can cause lasting anxiety around the feeding area specifically — a cat that associates eating with sudden scares may develop food anxiety or eat less
- Creates chronic low-level stress in an animal that has no way to understand what keeps appearing behind it
The RSPCA’s statement was clear: the videos are “not kind” and “could cause the cat to injure themselves” (the landing after a panic leap can cause genuine physical harm) in addition to the psychological stress.
So: it was funny. Stop doing it.
Why Does This Tell Us About Cat Anxiety More Broadly?
The cucumber response is a window into something important about cat psychology: cats are highly dependent on environmental predictability for their sense of safety.
Unlike dogs, which are more socially buffered (a trusted human present makes most environments feel safer), cats are more spatially anchored. Their sense of security comes significantly from familiarity with their territory — they know where everything is, they know the smells, they know the sounds. When the environment violates expectations, the alarm response is strong.
This is why environmental changes can cause significant stress in cats — new furniture, renovations, moves, new pets. The cat isn’t being dramatic. Its safety is genuinely linked to environmental predictability in a way most dog owners don’t fully appreciate.
How to Actually Help a Stressed Cat
If your cat has been frequently startled or shows signs of environmental anxiety — hiding, over-grooming, decreased appetite, excessive vocalisation, litter box avoidance — the interventions that work are:
- Feliway (synthetic feline facial pheromone) diffusers — replicate the calming scent-marking cats do with their cheeks, creating a sense of a safe, familiar environment
- Providing vertical space — elevated positions increase a cat’s sense of security by giving it a vantage point and escape route
- Predictable routine — consistent feeding times, play times, and human interactions reduce chronic low-level alertness
- Not doing the cucumber thing
Quick Answers to Everything Else
My cat wasn’t scared of the cucumber at all. Why?
Individual variation, and context. A less startlable cat, a cucumber presented less suddenly, or a cat that happened to see it appear — any of these produce a different response. The meme required very specific staging to produce the dramatic results.
My cat is scared of lots of things. Is that a problem?
Cats with a generally high startle threshold and low environmental confidence may benefit from environmental enrichment, hiding spaces, and — if the anxiety is significant — a vet conversation about whether behavioural support or medication might help.
Are cats scared of bananas for the same reason?
Yes — bananas placed in the same manner produce similar responses. Also because bananas, once overripe, emit ethyl acetate and isoamyl acetate, which cats reportedly dislike strongly. So: shape-based alarm plus smell-based aversion.
The Bottom Line
Cats aren’t afraid of cucumbers. They’re afraid of unexpected large objects appearing silently in their safe spaces. Cucumbers just got famous for being the unexpected large object.
The videos are funny. The experience for the cat is not. Do something else to entertain the internet.
