Calculate exactly how many calories your cat needs per day — based on the NRC (National Research Council) formula used by veterinary nutritionists, adjusted for age, weight, and activity level.
The formula uses Resting Energy Requirement (RER): 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75. This is then multiplied by a life-stage factor from the NRC's Nutrient Requirements of Cats.
Neutering reduces a cat's energy needs by roughly 20–25% because of hormonal changes that lower metabolic rate. Most owners significantly overfeed neutered indoor cats, which is the leading cause of feline obesity.
This is a starting point — individual cats vary. If your cat is gaining or losing weight on these calories, adjust by 10% and monitor over 2 weeks.
