Why "multiply by 7" is wrong

The 7x rule is a cultural myth with no scientific basis. Dogs don't age linearly — they age very rapidly in puppyhood, then slow down significantly.

A 2019 study in Cell Systems mapped dog aging by comparing methylation patterns in dog and human DNA. The result: a logarithmic formula that reflects how dogs actually age, with size factored in because larger dogs age faster.

This calculator uses that research, adjusted by size class based on American Kennel Club longevity data.
